The Atikokan General Hospital will soon be providing patients with better access to quality care thanks to more than $11 million in provincial funding for an expansion and renovation project.
The announcement of the project was made on Wednesday by Thunder BayAtikokan MPP Bill Mauro. “Our government’s investment of up to $11.3 million into the Atikokan General Hospital means a more modern facility that will deliver better coordinated and integrated acute and longterm care,” Mauro said, at a groundbeaking ceremony for the new hospital addition. The project will see a new addition built and renovations to the local hospital, which will provide four new acute care beds bringing the total to 15 beds and four more longterm care beds bringing the total to 26 beds. About 6,200 square feet of the existing facility will be renovated and about 8,900 square feet will be added as part of the addition. Construction is expected to be complete sometime during the winter of 2017. “We are very excited to begin work on this important project for the community of Atikokan,” said hospital CEO Doug Moynihan. “The results of this project will allow us to provide increased quality care to our patients and residents.”
