ATIKOKAN is a community of approximately 3,500 people surrounded by wilderness and parks. We have a number of small businesses, as well as tourism in the area.
Atikokan is situated immediately adjacent to a major entry point into Quetico Provincial Park and it is called the “Canoeing Capital of Canada”. We have many clean lakes in the area; so clean they are safe for drinking, warm for swimming from mid June to September, and great for fishing anytime.
There is ample opportunity for summer and winter outdoor activities. There are hiking trails and unlimited canoeing in the area in the summertime, and in the wintertime there are major groomed snowmobile trails as well as groomed cross-country ski trails, and also downhill skiing. In the community we have a 9-hole golf course, indoor swimming pool, hockey arena and curling rink.
Atikokan is conveniently situated, a two hour drive from Thunder Bay, eight and a half hours from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and six and a half hours from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Atikokan offers community daycare facility, public and separate elementary schools, high school, and continuing education programs through Confederation College.
We have been fortunate to have a stable population of physicians working in Atikokan, which you will find to be a very supportive environment. We are looking for full-time and part-time physicians to join our group. Physicians are well paid through the Rural & Northern Physicians Group Agreement (RNPGA), which allows 8 weeks off per year for vacation and CME.
Atikokan General Hospital is a 41-bed fully accredited hospital, with 15 acute care and 26 long-term care beds. We have a well equipped lab, x-ray facilities, ultrasound and a hospital that is willing to meet new physicians’ needs as well as the needs of the community. We have a modern renovated medical clinic with ten examining rooms and one procedure room. Electronic Medical Records with software by Practice Solutions has been up and running since October 2006 at the clinic. Atikokan has a Family Health Team to help facilitate healthcare in the community. Through the team, comprised of physicians, registered nurses, mental health worker/counsellor, dietitian, and a pharamacist, the Family Health Team is an asset for healthcare in the community of Atikokan.
Atikokan is associated with the Thunder Bay campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and Family Medicine North residency program. As a result, teaching opportunities occur on a regular basis. The physicians in this community strive to find a balance between a rewarding career and time for family life and personal pursuits. If you are interested in finding out about some of the best rural practice in the country, why not come up and see for yourself.
