Job Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Clinical Extern will work in the capacity of an unregulated health care provider who provides basic clinical care to patients and their families. Clinical Externs work in collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team under the supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional. They will participate in a team-orientated approach to patient care within the facility and will be responsible for providing a range of health care services. Nursing Externs will provide support mainly to the Acute Care and ER departments and may also be assigned to Extended Care Wing. Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Externs will be assigned to the rehabilitation department.
Requirements:
- Nursing students in any year of study and enrolled in a CNO approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program, or
- Students enrolled in an accredited Occupational Therapy, or
- Students enrolled in an accredited Physiotherapy program, or
- Students enrolled in the 2nd year of Paramedic program, or
- Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:
Are in any year of study in a CNO approval program, such as BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or

- Are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration, or
- Have completed their educational requirements and are waiting to write their registration exam.
- Students who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities relative to the situation and scope of practice.
- Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
- Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
